Recently one of our readers wrote us an email asking what the title of this post means. He said that he had gone on a date with this woman he´s been seeing for the past three weeks, and that at the end of it they said goodbye and she specifically said,
"You do know gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love"
Obviously our reader felt a little perplexed and so he came to us wanting to know exactly what it meant. Of course, this is a topic we deemed would be equally helpful for our reader population, so we decided to share our analysis with you.
Actually we would like to address the originis of this quote first. We made some research and found out that what our fellow female protagonist used is an unsourced variant of something Albert Einstein scribbled in german on the margins of a letter he received. Originally, the quote read
"Falling in love is not at all the most stupid thing that people do - but gravitation cannot be held responsible for it."
Two very similiar quotes, but let´s say, with completely different connotations. In our reader´s case, this is what most likely was going on in the woman´s head when she intonated those words:
"I like going out with you. You seem like a really nice guy and we have fun together, but there´s just something that´s missing. I mean I see great potential in you, but I see you more like a friend at the moment."
Our reader must not be disillusioned at all. Basically she is just letting him know, that for her to fall in love with him, she needs him to make bolder moves that will lead her down the path of the explosive and gratifying feeling of love. Gravity will not be responsible for it.
With regards to Albert Einstein, he well could have thought that falling in love was surely something stupid humans did, still that didn´t keep him from falling in love with two different women over the course of his life.
